At the end of last year, Jesy Nelson announced that she was leaving Little Mix, much to the shock and disappointment of fans. Ahead of her departure, the 29-year-old singer had noticed she was not enjoying her job and the pressures that came with being in a girl band anymore.

She has now opened up about her experience of being a pop star and what proved to be the “breaking point”.

Jesy said that after lockdown, she became more aware of the effect work was having on her mental health.

As coronavirus restrictions were lifted, the singer had to return to work and with that came the added pressure of looking her best for photoshoots and television appearances.

One of her first jobs was to record the music video for the band’s new release.

However, on the day of filming, Jesy was filled with anxiety.

She had embarked on an “extreme diet” in order to lose weight and prepare for the shoot.

Jesy told Cosmopolitan UK that she suffered a panic attack while on set.

Her bandmates Jade Thirlwall, Perrie Edwards and Leigh-Anne Pinnock had to continue filming and so there is a scene in the band’s music video for the track Sweet Melody where Jesy is missing.

“There’s a scene in Sweet Melody I’m not in because that’s when I had a panic attack and broke down.

“I was like, ‘I just want to go home,’” she told the publication.

The X Factor star said she was “sobbing” in the dressing room instead of filming.

It was at this point that the songstress released that she had to focus on her own wellbeing.

Jesy announced that she was leaving Little Mix in December.

At the time she spoke about her own mental health.

“The truth is recently being in a band has really taken a toll on my mental health. I find the constant pressure of being in a girl group and living up to explications hard.

“There comes a time in life when we need to reinvest in taking care of ourselves rather than focussing on making other people happy, and I feel like now its the time to begin that process,” she told fans.

Earlier this month, two of Jesy’s former bandmates announced they are pregnant.

Leigh-Anne was the first to share her baby news, revealing she is expecting her first child with her fiancé Andre Gray.

Within a few days, Perrie announced her own pregnancy.

She and partner Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain are also due to welcome a child into the world later this year.
