Kate Garraway was pictured smiling as she stepped out with her son Billy, 10, yesterday. The 53-year-old Good Morning Britain presenter has been unable to see her husband Derek Draper, 52, in the flesh, after he was hospitalised at the end of March.

Her appearance comes after her emotional interview on GMB last week where she revealed her fears that her spouse could be comatose “forever”.

Kate’s friend Jane Moore revealed on Loose Women that Derek has now been taken out of an induced coma but has yet to regain consciousness.

The mum-of-two appeared in high spirits as she crossed the road with a smile on her face and headed to a car parked nearby.

She looked chic sporting a green floral blazer teamed with skinny jeans and beige heeled ankle boots.

The TV presenter put on a brave face during the outing following her tearful return to GMB.

Pal Jane recently sat down with her for an in-depth interview about her current family life, as Derek remains very unwell.

The former told her co-stars: “I honestly don’t know how she’s still standing.”

She opened up on her chat with Kate, which took place at a safe distance for “a couple of hours” in the star’s garden.

Discussing Derek’s battle, she continued: “Derek contracted coronavirus, he went to hospital, it looked initially like he might have a Boris Johnson experience, and come out largely unscathed, but it attacked all his vital organs.

“He’s now COVID free, they’ve brought him out of the coma, they put him into an induced coma and brought him out of the coma, and he’s not regained consciousness yet.

“So every day she is living with this awful uncertainty, she’s now talking about maybe our normality is that they are never going to know if he will recover.”

Jane then opened up on how Kate has continued to deal with the tragic situation and how she’ll cope with what’s to come in the future.

She explained that Kate revealed that her husband may be trapped in a coma “forever” and doctors have warned her to prepare for the “second worst case scenario”.

At the weekend, Kate discussed her spouse’s text message to her before being admitted into intensive care.

Derek tested positive for coronavirus and was later placed in an induced coma but has yet to regain consciousness.

Kate has now opened up about the moments leading up to Derek being hospitalised and admitted he believed he was “doing great” and doctors were hopeful he would make a full recovery.

Speaking to The Sun, the GMB host explained: “Even when he got to hospital, and tested positive for the virus, doctors were very hopeful of recovery.

“There’s a text from him on my phone saying, ‘The doctors have been round, they’re saying I’m definitely not going to die. I’m doing great’.”

But to the presenter’s dismay, things only “escalated from there” as Derek’s symptoms began to worsen.

Kate added: “He had to take it second by second . . .  Another breath, another breath. They then put him in a coma.”
