Kerry Washington Reacts to People Watching Her Film American Son Right Now
Kerry Washington is expressing gratitude for those who are watching her 2019 film, American Son, amid the ongoing Black Lives Matter protests.
The Netflix film is based on the acclaimed Broadway play of the same name and follows an estranged couple who are forced to reunite in a Florida police station and work together to find their missing teenage son. Throughout the film, Washington’s character struggles with police enforcement to take her fear over her missing son seriously and is actively reminded of how racist the system can be.
“It makes me so happy that people are watching #AmericanSon on @netflix to deepen their compassion and understanding,” wrote Washington on Instagram, alongside an image of the film’s official artwork. “My dream for this film was to spark conversations that would lead to change. What questions are popping up for you as you watch or after you watch?”
Washington has remained outspoken about the Black Lives Matter movement in the days following the tragic murder of George Floyd at the hands of police officials. The actress recently held a guided yoga and meditation session on her Instagram and shared that she would be making donations to the Black Visions Collective and Louisville Community Bail Fund for every participant who joined in.
“Today I woke up thanking God for my ability to breathe. Even in the heartache. And in the anger. And in the fear,” wrote Washington. “We breathe if we can. And we must breathe.”
