Lucille Ball's great-granddaughter dies of breast cancer, aged 31

Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz’s great-granddaughter Desiree Anzalone has died of breast cancer aged 31.

Desiree died ‘peacefully’ on September 27, in Connecticut, six years after she was first diagnosed.

Mum Julia confirmed the news to People magazine, explaining that ‘watching her slip away was just, I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.

‘No mother should have to watch that.’

Desiree was the only child of Julia and her husband Mario Anzalone.

Lucille’s middle name was Desiree, with her first great-grandchild honoured with the moniker in tribute.

She was first diagnosed with breast cancer aged 25, and underwent a double mastectomy and chemotherapy.

Sadly, doctors revealed she had stage 4 cancer two years ago, with the disease spreading to her liver, lungs and bones.

Speaking about the illness, Julia explained they had expected her to survive through the festive period.

‘She probably would have been with us for a few more years — it was starting to spread a lot more, and the tumours were getting bigger — but we expected her to stay at least through the holidays,’ she said.

‘What went wrong is she kept getting fluid around her heart and then they kept doing surgeries and it would come back like two weeks later.’

After Desiree underwent more surgery, doctors informed her that she had ‘days, if hours’ to live.

‘She was so special,’ she added. ‘We were [best friends]. We are still.’
