Rachel Riley, 34, shared a Countdown viewer’s video on Twitter, which showed Nick Hewer, 76, discussing the word beaver with his co-stars. The six-letter word was unveiled from a conundrum the maths whizz put together at their guests’ request.
He absolutely knows what he’s doing
After Countdown guest Mike read out the word he found, Nick asked Susie Dent if there were “any more beavers in the corner”, while maintaining a straight face.
Despite smirking at his remark, lexicographer Susie remained professional and confirmed the six-letter word was a legitimate word from the conundrum.
Rachel could then be seen smiling at the camera, seemingly as an attempt not to laugh as she stood in front of the board, where “beaver” was written out.
A viewer of the show shared the clip on Twitter with the caption: “Poor Nick… don’t think he had any idea what he’d said.
“However someone’s smile suggested otherwise!! [Crying with laughter emojis] @RachelRileyRR.”
Addressing the humorous situation, Rachel insisted her co-star was purposely acting oblivious.
She commented: “He absolutely knows what he’s doing.”
Many of the presenter’s followers flocked to her post to share their thoughts about the moment.
One user wrote: “I have thought this for a while now. Nick comes up with some crackers. He’s actually a comedy genius, he keeps a straight face so well.
“Maybe he could take Jimmy’s place on Cats one day, just a thought.”
“It’s the straight face. He does it very well,” a second commented.
A third penned: “Of course he knows what he’s doing.”

Nick is no stranger to a cheeky innuendo on the daytime show.
One of his most memorable outbursts was when he told viewers Rachel was “gagging for a hard one” in 2016.
Rachel has also spoken out about rude words she has come across in a conundrum on the show.
Speaking to Express.co.uk, she said: “Most of them are well-documented online but some one of the funny ones for me are growlers because it’s perfectly innocent and you can get a definition of a bear.
“But then when Nick repeats it over and over and over, I’m sure the younger viewers – teenagers – might know something else quite funny.
“They’re the ones that get me.”
Rachel joined the Channel 4 daytime show in 2009 as Carol Vorderman’s replacement.
She has also been a part of the programme’s spin-off show 8 Out Of 10 Cats: Does Countdown since its inception in 2012.
