High blood pressure, or hypertension, is the precursor to serious health problems, ranging from heart attacks to strokes.

Therefore, keeping your reading in check is essential, with one surprising drink promising to deliver the results.

While milk has long been vilified for its associations with high cholesterol because much of the fat it contains is saturated, skimmed milk could have some tricks up its sleeve.

James Brady, Personal Trainer at OriGym, said: “Milk products contain a certain type of protein called bioactive peptides which have been shown to have a positive effect on blood control. 

“These peptides allegedly have Angiotensin-Converting-Enzyme (ACE) inhibitory properties which can relax the walls of your blood vessels and lower your blood pressure.”

Another reason why skimmed milk could lower high blood pressure comes down to the key nutrients it contains, including calcium, potassium, and magnesium. 

Brady said: “Salts and minerals such as calcium, potassium, and magnesium play a role in controlling blood pressure as they can help blood vessels tighten and relax when necessary.”

Dr Sunni Patel, from Dish Dash Deets, explained that potassium can help regulate hypertension by reducing the effects of sodium on your reading.

He added that magnesium can help relax your blood vessels and improve blood flow, resulting in lower blood pressure levels.

Don’t just take the experts’ word for it, as a study, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, found that drinking a glass of skimmed milk a day can cut blood pressure by up to a third.

Dr Patel added: “The extent to which skimmed milk can lower high blood pressure will depend on a variety of factors, including the severity of the hypertension and the individual’s overall diet and lifestyle. 

“It is worth noting that the reduction in blood pressure may not be immediate and may take a few weeks to months to become noticeable.

“Consistent consumption of skimmed milk as part of a balanced diet, along with other lifestyle modifications such as exercise and stress management, may help to further improve blood pressure over time.”

According to Brady, two cups of milk a day should be enough to do the trick and keep your reading in check.

However, Dr Patel noted that the amount necessary for a reduction may vary depending on factors such as age, sex, body weight, and overall diet and lifestyle habits. 

He added: “Studies suggest that consuming three servings of low-fat dairy products per day, including skimmed milk, can lead to a modest reduction in blood pressure.

“It is important to note that excessive consumption of dairy products, even low-fat or fat-free options, may have negative health effects, such as increasing the risk of certain cancers. 

“Therefore, it is important to consume skimmed milk and other dairy products in moderation as part of a balanced diet that also includes a variety of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins.”
