Iditarod disqualifies four-time champion Lance Mackey for positive methamphetamine test
Four-time Iditarod champion Lance Mackey has been disqualified from this year's race due to a positive test for the drug methamphetamine.
Mackey had finished 21st in the 2020 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, but Alaska Public Media reports a message sent to sponsors on Thursday revealed the positive test came from a sample collected along the trail in White Mountain.
In a statement, Mackey said he planned to seek treatment.
“I’m tired of lying to myself, friends, family, and fans, who have all supported me, rooted for me, or been inspired by me. I apologize to all of you,” he said. “The truth is that I need professional help with my latest life challenge. I am in the process of making arrangements to go to a treatment center where I can get the professional help and real change I need.”
