Princess Diana 'Panicked a Lot' When Doing This 1 Activity Other Royals Love

Princess Diana had trouble fitting in with the royal family. It is well known that her personality clashed with some royals’, and she often disagreed with some of their traditions.

As such, perhaps it is not surprising she also disliked one activity that the royal family enjoyed doing together. In fact, she once revealed that she  “panicked a lot” when having to partake in it.

Princess Diana said she ‘panicked a lot’ when going to Balmoral Castle

The royal family has a tradition of going to Balmoral Castle in Scotland every year. It is Queen Elizabeth’s summer home, and her family visits her quite often.

However, Diana had apparently never taken a liking to Balmoral. As reported by Harper’s Bazaar, Diana shared with Andrew Morton in the book Diana: Her True Story in Her Own Words, that the trips often made her stressed out.

“This myth about me hating Balmoral—I love Scotland, but just the atmosphere drains me to nothing,” she shared. “I go up ‘strong Diana.’ I come away depleted of everything, because they just suck me dry, because I tune in to all their moods and, boy, are there some undercurrents there!”

She also added, “Instead of having a holiday, it’s the most stressful time of the year. It’s very close quarters.”

“I panic a lot when I go up to Balmoral. It’s my worst time, and I think: ‘How the hell am I going to get out of this?’” Diana explained, “The first couple of days, I’m frightfully chirpy when I get up there and everything’s wonderful. By the third day, they’re sapping me again. There are so many negative atmospheres. That house sucks one dry.”

Other royals love Balmoral

Members of the royal family have been visiting Balmoral since they were kids. Unlike Diana, they tend to have good things to say about the castle.

For example, in 1968, Charles spoke fondly of Balmoral before returning to Trinity College in Cambridge. He said (via Hello!), “I cannot tell you how much I miss Balmoral and the hills and the air – I feel very empty and incomplete without it all.”

Meanwhile, in the documentary Our Queen at Ninety, Princess Eugenie talked about Balmoral as well, according to the Evening Standard.

“It’s the most beautiful place on Earth,” she said. “I think Granny is the most happy there, I think she really, really loves the Highlands… Walks, picnics, dogs—a lot of dogs, there’s always dogs!—and people coming in and out all the time.”

Eugenie continued, “Family-wise we’re all there, so it’s a lovely base for Granny and Grandpa to be—for us to come and see them up there, where you just have room to breathe and run.”

Princess Diana first met the royal family at Balmoral

Although Diana may not have liked Balmoral very much, it is still a significant place. After all, it was where she was introduced to the royal family for the very first time.

As Diana shared with Andrew Morton in the book Diana: Her True Story in Her Own Words, she was “terrified” about the experience.

“I was terrified—sh**ing bricks,” she said. “I was frightened because I had never stayed at Balmoral and I wanted to get it right. The anticipation was worse than actually being there.”

However, Diana said things were “all right” after the initial nervousness went away.
