Stephenie Meyer announces release date for new ‘Twilight’ book, ‘Midnight Sun’

Twelve years after Stephenie Meyer shelved her cult-favorite vampire romance series, “Twilight,” its saga is seeing a new dawn.

Meyer, 46, has announced the release date for a new “Twilight” book, “Midnight Sun,” a prequel which will take diehard fans on a journey through the perspective of vampire Edward Cullen, instead of the series’ usual protagonist, Bella Cullen (née Swan).

The “Midnight Sun” release date is Aug. 4. The news is sure to delight an army of readers who made Meyer one of the best-selling authors of all time. Likewise, the “Twilight” movies, which launched actors Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart to fame, grossed $3.3 billion worldwide.

Last week, the “Twilight” fan base was ignited by a countdown clock on Meyer’s website, which was set to Monday. That’s when the author announced the news in a pre-recorded segment for “Good Morning America.”

“It’s a crazy time right now,” she said, referring to the coronavirus pandemic, “and I wasn’t sure it was the right time to put this book out, but some of you have been waiting for just so so long. It didn’t seem right to make you wait anymore.”

Meyer originally put her series on indefinite hold in 2008 after chapters from what would become “Midnight Sun” leaked online. She stopped writing it and posted a partial draft on her website.

Fans who noticed the countdown on her website were hopeful that it meant “Midnight Sun” would finally be completed — as opposed to her other works such as “The Host” and “Austenland.”

“Me crying and clutching onto the crumbs barely big enough to point to ‘Midnight Sun,’ ” wrote one fan on Twitter.

“My brain: the host’s sequel. My heart: midnight sun,” guessed another. “Either way, I’m so excited.”

“This unforgettable tale as told through Edward’s eyes takes on a new and decidedly dark twist,” the publisher said. “Meeting beautiful, mysterious Bella is both the most intriguing and unnerving event he has experienced in his long life as a vampire. As we learn more fascinating details about Edward’s past and the complexity of his inner thoughts, we understand why this is the defining struggle of his life.

“How can he let himself fall in love with Bella when he knows that he is endangering her life?”
