This simple hack will tell you if you need to replace your pillows
It’s a gross but often overlooked fact that old pillows are likely to be full of bacteria.
That’s why you should really be changing them quite frequently, because you don’t want to lay your head down every night on something that’s teeming with nasties.
But how do you know when it’s time to get a new one? A woman from Melbourne, Australia, has shared a simple hack that will tell you if your pillow has ‘expired’ and it’s time to replace it.
Chantel Mila explained that not many people know that pillows actually have expiration dates.
‘Pillows harbour dust, skin cells and oils so they expire after one to two years,’ Chantel posted on TikTok.
But the date depends on the type of pillow you have. Synthetic pillows really need to be replaced as often as every six to 12 months, but down pillows last between two or three years.
So, what was Chantel’s super simple hack?
She calls it the ‘bounce back’ test.
Fold your pillow in half on a surface, then hold it folded for 30 seconds.
‘Pillows should bounce back if fresh,’ Chantel said in her video clip.
If they don’t bounce back, it probably means it’s time to invest in replacements.
On TikTok, people in the comments were loving this hack, with lots of people saying they had no idea that pillows needed replacing so frequently.
Others asked whether frequent washing of the pillows would help them last longer.
‘It’s definitely still important to wash your pillows quarterly,’ Chantel explained.
But, she added, if you have synthetic pillows and haven’t replaced them in more than a year, they have probably expired.
‘This is such a good idea, I never knew you could do this,’ one commenter posted.
‘Thanks for the tip – going to check mine right now,’ another added.
