Tinder adds 'block your ex' feature to reduce awkward swiping encounters
You can move house and change your number to avoid your ex, but there’s always the change you’ll bump into them virtually.
While swiping on dating apps, coming across someone from your past isn’t ideal, and an accidental (or pity) match can be problematic.
With this in mind, Tinder is rolling out a new feature where you can block contacts, so everyone from your ex to your family members never need to know about your dating exploits
The Block Contacts feature will allow you to steer clear on anyone whose number you have saved.
Even if they don’t have Tinder, you can add their number to your list so that if they do join they won’t see you.
It’s launching just in time to help consumers navigate this year’s wave of seasonal uncouplings. Known as ‘Uncuffing Season’, the annual onset of warmer weather compels hibernating couples to cut ties just in time to enjoy an unattached summer season.
‘We may not be able to save you from awkward run-ins at the coffee shop, but we are giving you more control over your experience on Tinder,’ said Bernadette Morgan, Group Product Manager, Trust & Safety at Tinder.
‘We’re rolling out Block Contacts as an additional resource empowering members with peace of mind by helping create a worry-free space for them to spark new connections.’
Initially tested in India, Korea and Japan, members who adopted the Block Contacts feature on Tinder added about a dozen contacts to their block list.
We don’t want to speculate, but we imagine this setting could be a haven for cheaters, who’ll block their significant others (and their pals) to participate in extracurricular activities in peace.
Given Tinder has been downloaded 430 million times worldwide, though, you’re probably not safe from a virtual ‘fancy seeing you here’ at some point.
