Wilko announces freebie for every customer amid fury over new policy controversy

Wilko sparked controversy this week by introducing a new policy in its stores.

And some would say it looks like the store is trying to get customers back on side by giving them a freebie.

The retailer hit news headlines on Wednesday (February 9) this week as it announced a new rule change which will allow pet dogs into its stores.

This saw some shoppers threatening to boycott the discount supermarket chain as they fear buying peed-on items and getting allergic reactions.

The new nationwide policy has been introduced because “many customers think of pets as family members”, Wilko says.

However, some customers didn't think the same.

The store seems to be moving away from the controversy today (February 10) by announcing it will be giving its customers a free hand sanitiser with every purchase.

What's better, it says, it that there’s no minimum spend limit required.

The gift aims to help customers 'have one less thing to think about during their busy lives' while still taking the precautions to protect themselves, according to Wilko.

It says the hand sanitiser will be available on a first-come, first-served basis while stock lasts and can be redeemed at the till, with stock levels varying store-to-store.

In addition to the gesture for customers, Wilko also says that it will also ensure that every one of its team members will be offered a free hand sanitiser prior to the gift launching.

This scheme follows Wilko's face mask recycling scheme, which allows shoppers to drop off used, disposable face masks so that they can be recycled into various materials, including furniture for community projects and public spaces.

Both schemes tie into the retailer’s ethos of supporting communities throughout turbulent times.

Jerome Saint-Marc, CEO at Wilko, commented: “Whilst restrictions of the pandemic begin to ease, we know many will remain cautious, which is why we’re putting the safety of our team members and customers first by giving them one less thing to think about whilst shopping with us in store.”

Who knows, you may need the hand sanitiser if a friendly dog decides to share its slobber.

The new rule sees pet owners able to shop with their four-legged friend at their side in over two-thirds of Wilko’s home and garden stores with only food aisles off limits.

However, the announcement angered customers further by not outlining dogs would have to remain on the lead.
