Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have opened up in their new tell-all Netflix documentary, Harry & Meghan, about married life and the response they received from the public and the Royal Family. The second episode focussed on the start of the couple’s relationship in 2016 and how it quickly hit headlines across the globe. has all you need to know about some of the highlights. 

Harry blasts Royal Family for not offering Meghan protection 

The Royal Family was called out in episode two after the Duke of Sussex claimed his family felt Meghan did not need protecting.

Racism in the press during the early stages of the couple’s relationship came into the spotlight as Harry opened up about a conversation he had with his family. 

He said: “The direction of the palace was ‘don’t say anything’, but for what we were trying to understand is, as far as a lot of the family were concerned, everything she was being put through, they had been put through as well.”

He added: “Some of the members of the family were like ‘Well my wife had to go through that, so why should your girlfriend be treated any differently?

“‘Why should you get special treatment? Why should she be protected?’

“I said the difference here is the race element.”

Harry warned Meghan ‘you can’t talk’ to press when they first met

Prince Harry and Meghan opened up about how Harry warned his new love interest she could not speak to the press. 

She said: “I remember going to the flower shop, going to get flowers and coming out of the flower shop…

“There must’ve been nine or 10 paps standing in the middle of the street and they’re all sort of blocking the car.

“(They’re) saying, ‘Hey, how are you doing, Meghan?’ And I was like, ‘Oh, thanks. Stay warm, guys.’ 

“And I remember H the next day saying you can’t talk to them.”

Harry warned Meghan that the media was suggesting she “loved” the attention from the cameras. 

Kate and William’s awkward first meeting with Meghan 

The Duchess of Sussex opened up about the first time she met the Prince and Princess of Wales. 

She explained: “Even when Will and Kate came over and I had met her for the first time… They came for dinner.

“I remember I was in ripped jeans and I was barefoot. I was a hugger, always being a hugger I didn’t realize that that is really jarring for a lot of Brits.

“I guess I started to understand very quickly  that the formality on the outside, carried through on the inside.”

She also admitted she “didn’t know what she was doing” when she first met The Queen.

Meghan Markle’s mum recalls moment she discovered daughter was dating Prince Harry 

Doria Ragland shared her memories of when her daughter called her to tell her she was in a relationship with Royalty. 

She said: “When she told me, we were on the phone and she says, ‘Mommy, I’m going out with Prince Harry.’ And I started whispering, ‘Oh, my God.’ 

“She says, ‘You can’t tell anyone.’ So it was from the beginning, it was sort of, ‘Oh, my God, nobody can… you know?’.”

Doria also opened up about meeting the Duke of Sussex for the first time, calling him “handsome” and “great-mannered”. 

Meghan Markle opens up about being the ‘product of divorce’ 

Meghan opened up about her childhood and a poem she wrote in which she said how life would be easier if there were “two of [her]”. 

She said: “There’s so much from anyone’s childhood that you bring with you into the present.

“Especially when you are the product of divorce”.

She added: “Even though my parents co-parented well, if you think about how that informs what you grew up to be and what you want.”

Meghan appeared emotional as she reminisced about the poem.
