Countdown viewers have been eagerly awaiting the arrival of new host Anne Robinson ever since she was announced as Nick Hewer’s replacement.
And now the wait is nearly over as Anne takes over the reins of the Channel 4 series from Monday 28th June at 2.15pm.
The former The Weakest Link host will lead the show’s first ever all-female team for five episodes a week, alongside current stars Rachel Riley and Susie Dent.
And when OK! caught up with the 76-year-old recently to talk about landing the big TV gig, she exclusively told us she was thrilled to be asked and couldn’t wait to make her mark on the long-running programme.
Speaking about how the offer came about, Anne explained: “A few of the channels had offered me different things that I’d turned down, and then this came along in a text.”
She continued: “I thought, “Oh, yes, I would like to do that. That’s quite a nice gig.” Each presenter shapes a programme so I thought I could have some fun.”
Adding that she thought she could bring her own flavour to the show, Anne said she hoped viewers would see: “Colourful outfits, my particular irony and probably a huge amount of curiosity. That’s what I rely on, actually, I’m just permanently nosy.
But while the TV legend admits to having some nerves ahead of filming, she’s now firmly into the swing of things.
She explained: “There’s always pressure when you’re doing a new show. I was nervous and anxious because you’ve got to learn the grammar of the programme.”
“But by the end of the first fifteen shows, I hope I’d got into the rhythm of it and stopped worrying about, ‘do I go to Rachel now, or do I talk to the guests?’”
Anne also pointed out that she, Rachel and Susie are making history as the first girl power team – one she’s very proud to be part of.
She said: “They’re both brilliant, top of the game. My mouth is open every time Rachel does that arithmetic off the top of her head. And Susie is a scholar.”
Nick’s last episode will air on Friday 25th June at 2.15pm, as he steps down after ten years on the show.
To mark the occasion, there will be plenty of messages from the team, as well as a special poem written by Dictionary Corner guest Rufus Hound.
