Antiques Roadshows Fiona Bruce left speechless at £200,000 gobstopper pearl

Antiques Roadshow's presenter Fiona Bruce was shocked when she learned the price of a yellow "gobstopper".

The host and jewellery expert Joanna Hardy were doing a round of the classic "Basic, Better, Best" game to estimate the value of three different types of pearls.

In the episode, which was filmed in Stonor Park, Oxfordshire, Joanna showcased a selection of vibrant-coloured pearls harvested from clams, shells and mussels.

"It's a foreign body that's got inside, and they try and get rid of that foreign body," she answered Fiona's question of how pearls were made.

"If they can't get rid of it, they will protect itself by forming a pearl sac around the irritant and that becomes the pearl."

At the end of the game, Joanna put up another challenge for Fiona.

She took a round yellow pearl from her pocket, saying: "I want to show you that. That's a melo melo pearl and that is over 100 carats.

"You can see why they are sometimes called the Sun Pearl."

Bedazzled by the size and the colour of the gem, Fiona commented: "Gosh, that's like a little kumquat!"

But the expert stressed: "There's only about ten in the world of this size.

"Do you want to make a guess of how much this might be?"

The presenter turned to the guests who suggested a price in the region of £50,000 to £65,000.

Fiona took a wild guess and said: "£100,000. We're all going for the £100,000. It could be?"

Joanna then revealed the value: "£200,000, if not more."

Fiona and the guests were left speechless while staring at the pearl.

At the end of the programme, Fiona got a chance to hold the gemstone in her hand.

She added: "We've seen some remarkable things here on the Roadshow, as we always do, but my favourite – is this £200,000 gobstopper."
