Money Heist, also known as La Casa de Papel, is a popular Netflix crime drama series. The show was created by Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato, both of whom also worked on the Spanish series, Sky Rojo. Fans may be interested to hear there are some connections between the two series.

Are Money Heist and Sky Rojo connected?

Money Heist is still going strong after four years and season five is due to air later in 2021.

The crime drama series follows the Professor (played by Álvaro Morte) and his gang of robbers as they target the Bank of Spain.

The highly-anticipated fifth series will reveal how the Professor handled his unexpected run-in with antagonist Alicia Sierra (Najwa Nimri).

Ahead of the fifth season, Netflix released Sky Rojo – another Spanish action crime drama telling a different story.

The new series follows three sex workers – Coral (Verónica Sánchez), Wendy (Lali Espósito) and Gina (Yany Prado), as they try to escape their pimp Romeo ( Asier Etxeandia).

A second season, consisting of eight episodes, is due to air on Netflix on July 23.

While both series were created by the same stars, fans are wondering how else the shows are connected.

Fans may be interested to hear some of the same locations were used for filming both series.

Sky Rojo is set in Tenerife, with filming taking place in Arico and Madrid.

Locations include Las Teresitas beach, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the Rasca Lighthouse, the Teide National Park and the San Andrés cemetery.

For many interior shots, both Money Heist and Sky Rojo were filmed at the Vancouver Media studios.

Another connection is the fact that both series are led with a female narrative.

In Money Heist, it is Tokyo (Úrsula Corberó) who takes the lead, whereas Sky Rojo is told from Coral’s perspective.

The stars of Sky Rojo did say the series was intended to be different from La Casa de Papel.

Sánchez told Espinof: “It would have been very easy to repeat something similar to La Casa de Papel but Sky Rojo is uncomfortable, risky and brave.”

The overall aesthetic of each series is very different, and totally different themes are addressed.

With this in mind, fans should definitely consider the two series as separate entities.

Fans have taken to social media to share their thoughts on Sky Rojo, which made its debut in March 2021.

One said on Twitter: “Just finished the first season of #SkyRojo. A MUST WATCH. Prepare to fall in love with miss Lali Espósito because she absolutely stole the whole show (and no it’s not just because of my personal bias).”

Netflix teased: “The wheel may be broken, but the chase continues. International sensation #SkyRojo returns with Season 2, premiering July 23 on Netflix.”

An official release date for Money Heist season five is yet to be revealed, but it is looking like September 2021.

The series was believed to be in the pipeline for April, but sadly this does not look to be the case.

The crime drama has proven to be so popular that a Korean version is in the making.

Hopefully, more information about the upcoming season will come to light this summer.
