Line of Duty subtitles let slip Jo Davidson’s secret blood relative is a man
Line of Duty fans could be a step closer to uncovering the identity of Jo Davidson’s relative.
Sunday’s programme was left on a massive cliffhanger as Spt. Ted Hastings (Adrian Dunbar) was shown a file containing a photograph of DCI Joanne Davidson’s (Kelly Macdonald) blood relative.
But the programme’s subtitles could contain a huge clue.
It was unveiled at the weekend that Jo is related to someone else found in police records, after forensics uncovered DNA evidence matching AC-12.
And as fans of the crime drama comb through the episode again for clues, one thing is for certain – at least according to the subtitles.
The person Jo is related to is a man, as Steve Arnott said: "He’s identified over the page."
Although the programme’s audio could have been misconstrued, the subtitles definitely helped to narrow down the scope of who the mystery person’s identity could be.
Fans took to social media to share their findings – and frustrations.
"Can tell which of you #LineOfDuty fans don’t use subtitles, guessing various women for Jo’s relative. Clock the pronoun, Arnott says HE!" one wrote.
Someone else added: "Had to turn on subtitles to check it’s a ‘he’. Wow. This series gets better and better #LineOfDuty."
And a third penned: "Subtitles said the blood relative was a he. I was wondering about Ryan."
Another fan said: "Admittedly I missed it too. […] I went back to iPlayer, with subtitles on, just to double check."
Theories and predictions have been circulating since the episode aired on Sunday, with some of the reigning theories being that the mystery relative is anyone out of Ryan Pilkington, the now-deceased Tommy Hunter or Scottish Mike Dryden.

Some viewers headed to Twitter to share their own predictions, with one writing: "My #LineOfDuty theories: The prison officer (handling Lakewell) tipped off the OCG. Jo Davidson is Tommy Hunter’s (estranged) daughter. Chloe Bishop is a red herring."
Someone else said: "Putting it out there in writing that Jo is Ryan’s (half) brother so when my theory comes true I’ll have proof."
And a third viewer penned: "Jo is related to Jimmy Lakewell and she was being blackmailed to keep him alive. It explains why she was so upset when Ryan told her because she now knows she can never be ‘done’ or get away from it."
But one thing’s for certain – fans are going to have to wait until next Sunday to find out who Jo is related to, when Line of Duty continues at 9pm.
