Money Heist fans love the character of Tokyo (played by Úrsula Corberó) who is known for her quick wit, impulsive behaviour, and loyalty to the team. However, some viewers are eager to know a bit more about her past, and how she found herself joining the gang in season one – here’s everything revealed about this.

What is Tokyo’s backstory in Money Heist?

In the past four seasons of Money Heist, viewers have followed Tokyo from being a reluctant recruit to one of the main leaders of the heist.

What’s more, the character not only has a central role but is also the narrator of the entire series.

As a result, many fans are curious to know more about her past and why she was chosen for the gang in the first place.

The first time viewers see her is at the beginning of episode one when she is in hiding after a robbery gone wrong.

  • Money Heist Part 5: First look at The Professor’s return

She is watching television with her face on it before seeing the dead body of her boyfriend.

She says in the voiceover: “My name is Tokyo but when this story began, that wasn’t my name.

“That was me. That was the love of my life. Last time I saw him, I left him in a pool of blood with his eyes open.

“We pulled off 15 perfect heists. But mixing love and business never works.”

She doesn’t reveal any more about exactly who he was or how they managed to pull the heists off.

However, this is a fascinating glimpse into her past, which some fans would like to see explored.

Posting on Reddit, fan Leiasaccount wrote: “Am I the only one that wants more of Tokyo’s life before the heist?

“Probably because she doesn’t have a lot of fans, but still, I wish we knew more about her since she is the main character.”

Another thing some fans would love to find out is why exactly Tokyo was picked for the heist gang by the Professor (Álvaro Morte).

User carlyleprick also wrote: “Tokyo’s action-oriented when the stakes are high.

“But the show still doesn’t explain how the Professor would know that about her, from her string of past robberies, so that can’t be the reason why she was picked. Hopefully part five addresses this.”

There is also a possibility viewers will be able to see more of her backstory in a potential spin-off of the show.

This is because series creator Álex Pina has also teased the possibility of spin-offs of the Spanish series.

Speaking to Oprah Magazine earlier this year, he said: “We do have many possibilities for some spin-offs, yes, and I think that’s thanks to the strong and powerful identities of the characters.

  • Money Heist season 5: Will Marseille’s backstory finally be revealed?

“We’ve always looked for characters to have a very complex, layered design.

“So I think almost every character of Money Heist has a duality that we would like to see in a spinoff. We could watch any of them in other contexts.”

He also added about who he would like to see: “From Nairobi to El Profesor…

“Denver is yet another character with his own charm. I would love to write all of them as spinoffs!”

Therefore, viewers will just have to wait and see whether any more is revealed about Tokyo’s past as the show continues.

Money Heist seasons 1-4 are available to stream on Netflix now.
