Riverdale fans divided over Archie and Betty cheating twist in ‘cringey’ musical episode – The Sun

FANS of Riverdale are very torn after the The CW drama's latest episode, with many mad at the Archie and Betty cheating storyline.

Not for the first time, the show adapted a famous musical to squeeze into one episode and this week it was John Cameron Mitchell's Hedwig and the Angry Inch.

It also followed in the season four tradition of packing the episode with a bunch of twists and turns, with many viewers left confused.

Riverdale returned this week after being off air for a while and decided to shock fans by revealing Betty (Lili Reinhart) and Archie (KJ Apa) had been getting frisky despite being shacked up with Jughead and Veronica respectively.

The couple have been dubbed 'Barchie' because fans had always wanted the pair to get together, but it seems they didn't want it to happen because of cheating.

One fan wrote on Twitter: “There is no coming back from this cheating storyline. Even if the characters forgive each other I will just be angry the whole time knowing this s*** happened.”

But not everyone was mad with one viewer writing: “I don’t care, I’m taking this as a victory. I am ready for Barchie.

“Is it wrong how they’re doing it? Yes. But do I enjoy the juice? Of course I do.”

It's not only viewers who have been shipping Barchie but also some of the Riverdale stars themselves.

Casey Cott who plays Betty's best friend Kevin, really wanted the two to get together.

He told TVLine: “I feel like however I answer this question, there are going to be hundreds of people outside my home egging it.

“I kind of like the idea of Archie and Betty getting together. They haven’t been able to explore that.

Riverdale is based on the Archie comics which are well known for the famous love triangle between Archie, Betty and Veronica (Camila Mendes).

Despite the love triangle actually being even more complicated because of Veronica’s (Camila Mendes) involvement, making it more of a love square, Archie actor KJ agrees with Casey and also thinks it’s time for Betty to have a go with his character.

In February, he opened up to BuzzFeed about the topic, saying: "I think the idea of Archie and Betty is really cool. Just because it’s so iconic."

Fans were also very divided about whether the episode successfully pulled off adapting Hedwig and the Angry Inch, a musical about an East German performer who suffers a botched gender affirmation surgery.

One tweeter user wrote: "Nothing has ever made me as incomprehensible furious as riverdale doing hedwig. I’ve truly never hated anything more."

Another said: "Color me unsurprised that Riverdale totally f***ed up their Hedwig episode."

But another disagreed saying: "Okay the Hedwig episode of Riverdale was actually kinda good? Definitely better than the other musical episodes. I think it’s because there was more (but still not enough) Kevin."
