'Sex and the City' Fans React to Reboot Cast Additions
More Sex and the City is on the way. (!!!) HBO announced earlier in 2021 that it had approved a revival series titled And Just Like That…, which will follow the characters in the next stage of their lives.
The cast of the Sex and the City reboot includes all of your favorites with the exception of Kim Cattrall, who’s decided not to reprise her role as the straightforward and sex-positive Samantha Jones. The reported plan is to bring on new faces in light of her absence. But that news was met with mixed reactions from fans of the original series.
The ‘Sex and the City’ reboot cast reportedly includes new people
According to TVLine, the revival includes Sarah Jessica Parker (Carrie Bradshaw), Cynthia Nixon (Miranda Hobbes), Kristin Davis (Charlotte York), and three women of color.
The website noted that the show is aiming to be more diverse and reflective of New York, which has been one of its biggest criticisms over the years. There are also reportedly plans to include three other people in the girls’ friend group, but details are unknown.
The update comes months after it was confirmed that Cattrall would not be returning for the reboot. Samantha’s absence, says HBO executive Casey Bloys, will be addressed in the revival, possibly painted as a fallout between her and her friends.
“Just as in real life, people come into your life, people leave. Friendships fade, and new friendships start. So I think it is all very indicative of the real stages, the actual stages of life,” Bloys previously told TVLine.
“[EP Sarah Jessica Parker and showrunner Michael Patrick King] are trying to tell an honest story about being a woman in her 50s in New York,” he added of the revival. “So it should all feel somewhat organic, and the friends that you have when you’re 30, you may not have when you’re 50.”
Fans reacted to the ‘Sex and the City’ cast additions online
After the news of the casting additions, fans rushed to social media to share their opinions, with many expressing excitement to see more diversity and inclusion in the show.
“#OMG. Can’t wait for this,” read one tweet.
Another Twitter user was equally amped, sharing a GIF of a man applauding and cheering wildly.
But at the same time, some fans were concerned about the execution.
“I think rather than tossing in a bunch of ethnic flavor, they should actually put thought into rectifying the outdated mistakes on the old show,” one fan wrote on Reddit. “Bring in more black cast members to rectify the Samantha episode, bring in a trans female to fix the mistake of the first show. As it is, I get less and less excited for this reboot and more nervous over the end result. You can’t fix a show by tossing in a bunch of minorities, it should be done thoughtfully.”
There were also some who felt the series just wouldn’t be the same without Samantha. “Sex and the city not gonna be the same without samantha chileeeee,” one person wrote, while another person said, “[I] see what they’re trying to do but this show doesn’t sound like it’s gonna be good. No Samantha or Mr. Big? What’s the point of watching?”
It’s understandable why some people are worried about Samantha’s absence, considering how important she was to the show. But there’s no doubt in our mind that the writers will be able to pull it off and give fans a story worthwhile. Keep a lookout for And Just Like Like That…, which enters production in spring 2021.
