Grey’s Anatomy season 18 will be kicking off on Thursday, September 30, on ABC with a new lot of episodes on the horizon. The long-running medical series has seen a plethora of famous faces walk through its doors with some familiar stars reappearing for the latest season. But five years ago it was international actor and director, Denzel Washington, who walked on set.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Grey’s Anatomy.

When was Denzel Washington in Grey’s Anatomy?

Denzel Washington has been acting for more than 40 years and has a long list of credits under his belt.

Some of his most well-known work includes Philadelphia, The Bone Collector, Malcolm X, Safe House, American Gangster and The Equalizer.

He also does work as a director, having been behind Fences and Antwone Fisher.

Washington has mostly stuck to films, having only directed one television show: Grey’s Anatomy.

The 66-year-old actor hasn’t physically appeared in an episode of Grey’s Anatomy.

Instead, he has worked on the show as a director, where he was in charge of the set of season 12’s The Sound of Silence.

The synopsis for this particular episode reads: “Meredith is brutally attacked by a patient, and Penny is the one who discovers her.

“The doctors of Grey Sloan Memorial rush to stabilise Meredith and remain by her side in the harrowing aftermath.”

While this may have been a memorable episode for fans, it was also for actress Pompeo who plays Meredith Grey.

But it wasn’t entirely for good reasons that she can recall him visiting the show.

Pompeo explained that this is because she had a falling out with Washington during filming.

She opened up about the incident to former co-star Patrick Dempsey on her podcast Tell Me With Ellen Pompeo.

Explaining what happened, Pompeo revealed she’d improvised in a scene, telling her co-star: “I was like, ‘Look at me when you apologise. Look at me.’ And that wasn’t in the dialogue.

“And Denzel went ham on my a*s. He was like, ‘I’m the director. Don’t you tell him what to do’.

“I was like, ‘Listen, motherf****r, this is my show. This is my set. Who are you telling?’”

She stated that this was an isolated incident and still has the “utmost respect for him as an actor and director”.

Grey’s Anatomy is returning for a new season after there were fears that it was coming to an end.

Fan-favourites such as Dempsey and TR Knight made a comeback during series 17, making viewers believe that this was the show’s way of saying goodbye.

Fortunately, this wasn’t the case with the drama now ready for its 18th season.

Grey’s Anatomy season 18 premieres on Thursday, September 30, on ABC. A UK release date hasn’t yet been announced.
